Pyro2024

The MINICOR project's research was presented at the 24th International Symposium on Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis (Pyro2024) on May 19 - 23, 2024, in Beijing, China.

One of the contributions received an Excellent Poster Award during the Awarding Dinner.

In the Pyro2024 topic ‘Pyrolysis for environmental applications’, Corinna Maria Grottola (STEMS-CNR) presented the ‘Effect of temperature and pyrolysis medium on biochar’.

In the MINICOR project, both the valorization of biomass residues through pyrolysis and the application of biochar for nitrogen management play a key role in the project's first step. The second stage, Moderate or Intense Low-oxygen Dilution (MILD) combustion, determines the bio-oil valorization and the CO2 reforming stage.

To introduce CO2 valorization into the process, pyrolysis was conducted under a CO2 environment, and the effect on the biochar structural properties and surface chemical functionalities for adsorbing ammonia was studied.

In the poster, both different temperatures and pyrolysis environments on biochar properties were discussed, and biochar performance in NH4+/NH3 adsorption was presented.

In MINICOR, the innovative combination and integration of processes and materials for nitrogen and CO2 management introduce cross-sectorial couplings and system integration opportunities.
